Martijn de Waal
Professor of Civic Interaction Design at the HvA | Scientific Director of the Centre of Expertise Creative Innovation
Martijn de Waal is HvA lecturer in the Civic Interaction Design lectorate and scientific director of the Centre of Expertise Creative Innovation. He has a background in journalism, media studies and practical philosophy. His research focus is on the relationship between digital media and public space, with specific interest in civic media and digital placemaking. His PhD thesis The City as Interface. How Digital Media Are Changing the City was published by publishing house NAi010 in 2014. With José van Dijck and Thomas Poell, he co-authored the book The platform society: struggle for public values in an online world. He is co-founder of The Mobile City, a non-profit organisation that has organised numerous workshops and events on digital media and urban culture since 2007. Before joining the HvA, he was an associate professor of media studies at the University of Amsterdam. In 2009, he was a visiting researcher at the MIT Center for Civic Media. At the turn of the century, he worked as a journalist for a wide range of Dutch media (de Volkskrant, VPRO Radio, Emerce) on technology and society.
