Whose voice is built into the algorithm? And what happens when the people who bear the consequences of AI and new technology deployed by municipalities, governments, and public bodies are not at the design table? The People vs AI is about advancing representation, making underrepresented voices heard, and recalibrating accountability in data-driven technologies.

The People vs AI returns to Amsterdam with its third edition: The Mockathon. Together with the municipality of Amsterdam, civil society organisations, affected communities, technologists, researchers, policymakers, lawyers, and artists, we simulate the deployment of an algorithmic or AI system in the city.

On Tuesday 2 June, invited participants — including people with lived experience, grassroots organisations, civil society organisations, policymakers, lawyers, and the municipality of Amsterdam — will spend a full working day simulating the deployment of an AI system in the city. The result: a blueprint for inclusivity, with concrete recommendations for decision-makers, designers, and public institutions, and a guaranteed seat at the table for communities affected by these technologies.

On Thursday evening, that blueprint will be presented to a wider audience at Pakhuis de Zwijger, followed by a panel discussion on community-built technologies that work for the communities they serve. Among the expected panellists is Rudy Fraser of Blacksky Algorithms, the developer behind one of the most widely discussed examples of community-built, community-centred algorithmic infrastructure.
